It looks like even the house of God has become fair game for politicians these days, judging from what is happening at the Waterfall Murugan Hilltop Temple in Jalan Kebun Bungah Penang.
The temple has been seeing a windfall of sorts with an increasing number of devotees and tourists making a beeline to go there since it was rebuilt into an impressive and imposing landmark at the top of the hill.
Not surprising therefore that it has also attracted the interest of politicians, especially those of Indian origin – be it from the DAP, MIC or any other wannabe.
However, what happened at the temple last Saturday is set to cause a storm which could lead to a major fallout among the Indian community and reignite the `warlord – godfather` spat between DAP chairman Karpal Singh and Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.
Apparently, a representative of the Hindu Endowment Board was caught red handed with RM10,395 in cash that he had allegedly pocketed from the collection boxes at the temple.
The incident took place at the temple premises and the 40-year-old man was caught discreetly slipping the cash into his sling bag.
Several committee members later conducted a search on him and found the money inside the sling bag. Ramasamy who was notified ordered a police report against the culprit and he was subsequently arrested.
The suspect’s family immediately contacted DAP’s Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer – who is also a the Hindu Endowment Board member, for help and pleaded that he intervene.
Taking pity to the man’s plight, Rayer decided to take it upon himself to instruct a temple clerk who had lodged the police report against the thief to withdraw his complain.
The case was then withdrawn but Ramasamy’s camp (in DAP) are now up in arms and are accusing Rayer of abusing his position to let the culprit off scot-free.
The incident has provided the perfect ammunition for Ramasamy to take on Rayer – who is seen as Karpal’s lackey by his detractors.
Ramasamy’s men have now restarted their unresolved battle against Karpal loyalist by leaking several damaging internal DAP conflicts and abuses to the state MIC guys.
It is just a matter of timing before DAP’s dirty linen is washed in public and MIC may be doing them the favour.
This latest issue, DAP insiders says, will most certainly snowball into round two of the battle between Ramasamy and Karpal, especially among those aligned to the two leaders.
“This time it would ultimately decide who is the real King of the Hill once and for all. This latest issue will open cans of worms about the endowment board and will shame certain DAP leaders.
“When this happens, all the shenanigans that have been going on in the Penang Hindu Endowment Board will be exposed for all to see.
“By then it will be too late for those who have been using their positions to empower themselves within the Indian community to safe themselves. The ramifications would be greater than them just losing their seats as they may well end up as outcasts within their own community,” a source within the board revealed.
The much expected battle is looming in the horizon and it’s a winner takes all situation, both on the hill and in the DAP.
There seems to be stark similarities between the thieves in the temple and the DAP in Penang.
